Jürgen Heumann (born May 9, 1948 in Paderborn ) is a German religious educator and university professor .

Life

Heumann grew up as the child of a Dortmund miner and initially trained as an administrative officer. After he had made up his Abitur on the second educational path , he studied at the Pädagogische Hochschule Ruhr in Dortmund and the University of Bochum for teaching in the subjects of Protestant theology , German studies and history. In 1973 he completed his studies with the first state examination and in 1975 with the second state examination.

Initially he worked as a teacher at schools in Dortmund. In 1977 he began working as a research assistant in course Religious Studies / Religious Education at the University of Oldenburg . In 1981 he was at the University of Dortmund with a thesis on a topic of religion educational doctorate (title: . Religiosity and everyday elements of a religious education theory on the identity and symbol ). From 1988 to 1992 he was director of studies at the Institute for Catechetical Service of the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg . In 1991 he completed his habilitation at the University of Oldenburg with a thesis on symbol didactics ( studies on the justification of a symbol didactic ) and was appointed private lecturer . In 1993 he was appointed to a university professorship for Protestant theology with a focus on religious education at the University of Oldenburg as the successor to Siegfried Vierzig , and in 2011 he was retired.

Heumann was chairman of the joint commission for teacher training at the University of Oldenburg from 1995 to 1999, dean of the faculty for human and social sciences from 2005 to 2008 and director of the Institute for Protestant Theology and Religious Education at the University of Oldenburg from 2009 to 2011.

Works

In his work, Heumann emphasizes the cultural significance of religions in the present. He advocates a basic religious education in public schools for all pupils. In the dialogue with theologies, the social and cultural sciences and the religious communities, he is concerned with general religious instruction, renouncing its confessional commitment. In addition to a large number of his own publications, Heumann is co-editor of the series Religion in the Public at Peter Lang Verlag .
