Jürgen Mümken (* 1965 in Oeding ) is a post-anarchist author. Mümken is primarily concerned with the relationship between post-structuralism and anarchism . In some of his works he explores the relationship between anarchist and Marxist criticism of the state and traces the theory of the modern state . In his work he refers to Michel Foucault and the work Empire by Antonio Negri and Michael Hardt. He also discusses questions about the subject between autonomy and heteronomy , with a focus on the sex- gender debate. Mümken has dealt with the Free Workers' Union of Germany (FAUD) in writings .

Life

Jürgen Mümken grew up in a village in the Münsterland. After training as a draftsman and doing community service, Jürgen Mümken studied architecture at the Kassel University with a focus on: prison architecture, housing policy, power and space.

He became politicized in the peace movement in the early 1980s , came into contact with anarchism in 1983 and became an anarchist through authors such as Augustin Souchy and Peter Kropotkin . During his studies he dealt with prison architecture and came into contact with the work of Michel Foucault .

In the 1990s he was mainly active in the autonomous movement. It soon occurred to him to combine Foucault's power analysis with anarchism. He was initially interested in the analysis of power , the decentralization of the subject, later the analysis of liberalism and neoliberalism , the concept of governmentality (rule in agreement with the ruled), the deconstruction of Jacques Derrida and "The Uneasiness of the Sexes" by Judith Butler important. A first publication in this direction followed in 1998 as the article “No power for nobody. Attempt at an anarchist appropriation of Michel Foucault's philosophical project ”in the“ Black Thread ”. 1997/1998 he was active in the national group "inside! City! Action!", Which was directed against so-called 'cleansing' of the inner cities, especially the expulsion of drug users, the homeless , punks and alcohol scene and lectured to. Then he started working on the book "Freedom, Individuality and Subjectivity", which was published in 2003 by Edition AV . While working on this book, he rediscovered Mikhail Bakunin primarily as a philosopher and became interested in Spinoza's philosophy . Based on the term “post-anarchism”, which includes various current disputes within anarchism, he put the website “postanarchism.net” online at the beginning of 2005. Jürgen Mümken has published book reviews in the libertarian monthly magazine Graswurzelrevolution since the 1990s .

Since 2007 he has published the Libertarian Library series at Edition AV . In this libertarian novels and short stories are reissued. The authors do not have to see themselves as anarchists. The novels and the stories have a libertarian content or report on libertarian events.

Post-anarchism

Mümken's focus is on researching the subjectivity of the individual in his relationship to the neoliberal postmodern state. He refers to both Marxist criticism of the state and post-structuralism. He is particularly interested in the post-feminist discourse as a reaction to social transformation processes. He is also interested in the subject as an autonomous, wage-dependent human capital . “The“ self-determination ”of the individual is becoming a central economic resource and a production factor (...) In this neoliberal way of thinking, work is no longer the necessary restriction of the freedom of the individual.” He does not only think about theory, but refers to practice from No. -Border movement (movement against borders), Peoples Global Action , the Zapatistas , the globalization critics and the autonomists.

Mümken admits that the post-anarchist discourse, especially in the English-speaking countries, does not play a role in the anarchist debates in the German-speaking area. This does not mean that its discussions do not nevertheless take place under different terms. “The various theoretical debates (post-structuralist anarchism, post-modern anarchism, etc.) that are summarized today under the term“ post-anarchism ”are older than the term. (...) it is only since 2001/02 that the various theoretical debates on postmodern and poststructuralist theories from an anarchist perspective have been summarized under post-anarchism. ”Therefore, the term reflects nothing more than a dedicated point of view.

Post-anarchism does not represent a uniform theory, but, like post-structuralism, post-feminism and post- Marxism, a whole series of different schools of thought. He states: “The view of people and the world of classical anarchism is outdated. The understanding of domination has changed and expanded. Since the establishment of classical anarchism, the reality of the state and capitalism has changed. In order to analyze them in the sense of anarchism, it is necessary to use the postmodern and poststructuralist toolbox. Foucault, Deleuze , Derrida, Butler, and others. a. are not anarchists, nevertheless their theoretical work is of great importance for an actualization of anarchism. The prefix “Post” stands for a questioning and rejection of some of the basic assumptions of classical anarchism, not for the abandonment of anarchist goals. ”In this sense, post-anarchism is understood as a continuation of the classical criticism of rule, including postmodern debates.

Mümken also deals with contemporary developments such as the deregulation of the housing market and Hartz IV laws and sees the housing issue as part of social issues.
