Jürgen Michael Meisel

Jürgen Michael Meisel (born March 12, 1944 in Heilbronn ) is a German Romanist .

Life

He completed his studies at the Leibniz Kolleg and at the University of Tübingen , at the Goethe University and at the University of Madrid Romance studies, German studies , philosophy and folklore with a doctorate in Frankfurt am Main in 1970 . From 1970 to 1971 he was a research assistant in the Romance Department at the University of Frankfurt. From 1971 to 1973 he was a research fellow in the linguistic departments of the University of California, San Diego and the University of Massachusetts Amherst . In 1973 he became scientific advisor and professor for Romance philology at the University of Wuppertal . From 1980 until his retirement in 2009 he taught as professor for Romance philology at the University of Hamburg . From 1999 to 2006 he was the spokesman for the Collaborative Research Center 538 “Multilingualism”. In 2004 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Lund University . From 2006 to 2008 he was Distinguished Visiting Professor, University of Calgary , Department of French, Italian & Spanish, Faculty of Humanities. From 2006 to 2012 he was Adjunct Professor, University of Calgary , Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Arts. From 2009 to 2014 he was a Distinguished Fellow, University of Calgary, Language Research Center, Faculty of Humanities. From 2012 to 2017 he was Adjunct Professor, University of Calgary, Dept. of Linguistics, Languages ​​and Cultures.

His main areas of work are language development (first and second language acquisition, language change, creol studies), multilingualism, grammar of Romance languages ​​and grammar theory.
