Jürgen Matthias von der Hude

Jürgen Matthias von der Hude , also van der Hude (* before February 12, 1690 in Lübeck ; † July 4, 1751 ibid) was a German painter.

Life

Jürgen Matthias von der Hude was the son of the Lübeck tin caster and elder Heinrich von der Hude († 1728). The von der Hude pewter foundry family had been active in Lübeck since the 16th century. Little is known about his life. It can be assumed that he was related to Bernhard Hinrich von der Hude , the main pastor of the Marienkirche in Lübeck . Von der Hude emerged primarily as a portrait painter, author of title pages for books, Lübeck scholar and drawing teacher, was considered "the best of the [Lübeck] contrafeyers of his time" and was able to meet the demand for portraits in Lübeck at that time largely to cover. His portraits, however, offer only a few artistic peculiarities or tensions.

After his death, an appeal appeared in the Lübeck advertisements in 1751: “We lost our famous contra celebration JM von der Hude here on July 4th, 1751 through death. This gives skilful contra celebrations the opportunity to serve the public with their art ... "

The portraits of the superintendent Johann Gottlob Carpzov , the mayor Hermann Rodde and the main pastors Jacob von Melle and Bernhard Heinrich von der Hude, which he painted for epitaphs in the Marienkirche, were all burned during the air raid on Palm Sunday 1942 .

Many of his portraits, such as those of Georg Heinrich Götze , Magnus von Wedderkop , Johann Jacob von Melle and Johann Henrich von Seelen , have been preserved through copperplate copies, most of which were made by the Hamburg engraver Christian Fritzsch .
