Georg Heinrich Gotze
Georg Heinrich Götze (born August 11, 1667 in Leipzig , † March 25, 1728 in Lübeck ) was a German Lutheran theologian and superintendent of the city of Lübeck.
Life
After Götze had attended the schools in his hometown, he enrolled at the University of Leipzig in the winter semester of 1683 , where he obtained a baccalaureate on November 15, 1684 and his master's degree on November 15, 1687 . During his studies he moved to the University of Jena , went to the University of Wittenberg on October 14, 1685 , where he was accepted as an adjunct at the Faculty of Philosophy on April 30, 1688 . Gotze had concentrated on studying theology.
Returned to Leipzig, he became a baccalaureate in theology on June 11, 1688 and took up a position as assistant preacher. In 1690 he was ordained as a pastor in Burg , in 1691 went to Chemnitz as a pastor and in 1694 to Dresden . From 1697 he was superintendent in Annaberg , from where it to carry out its activities on August 25, 1698 the degree of licentiate acquired and on November 9, 1699 Doctor of theology doctorate . In 1702 the council of the imperial city of Lübeck appointed him as the successor to August Pfeiffer as superintendent of the city, which was connected with a sermon position at the Marienkirche . In this office he worked for 26 years until his death.
Götze is considered to be a representative of a mild Lutheran orthodoxy that still defended itself against any influence of pietism . At the beginning of his term in office in Lübeck, in 1703 he introduced the new hymnbook published by the Ministry of Spiritual Affairs under the leadership of Senior Thomas Honstedt , the first official hymnbook of the Lübeck church. He supported Dietrich Buxtehude in holding the evening music in the Marienkirche.
He was buried in the Marienkirche under the grave slab of the first Lübeck superintendent Hermann Bonnus as a second use. The grave slab was in the Marienkirchhof from 1895 and is currently undetectable.

Götze “was a versatile man with an almost terrifying literary productivity.” In addition to exegetical and ecclesiastical works, he wrote edification books and published an immense number of disputations, sermons and personal papers. The VD 17 already had 80 titles by 1700, the VD18 has currently digitized 84 titles.
