Jürgen Pansow (born July 15, 1939 in Greifswald (Western Pomerania), † March 23, 2010 in Berlin ) was a German graphic artist , painter and sculptor .

Life

The descendant of a West Pomeranian patrician family from Stralsund was shaped in the period between World War II and the reunification of Germany; through his travels to the republics of the Soviet Union, France and North America, as well as visits to ancient sites in Egypt, Greece and Italy.

After graduating from high school in 1946, he did an apprenticeship as a steel shipbuilder . Then he studied at the shipbuilding faculty in Rostock. He would have made a good shipbuilder, but his vein to art and his skill at design was greater. In 1962 he studied graphic design at the technical school for applied arts . 1966 employed as a graphic designer at the Tribüne Berlin publishing house . In 1972 he studied sculpture at the Berlin Art Academy under Karl-Heinz Schamal , Wilfried Fitzenreiter and Werner Stötzer .

In 1977 he became a master class student at the Academy of Arts with Wieland Förster and Theo Balden at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art . Since 1980 he has worked as a freelance sculptor and painter in Berlin. He created sculptures for public spaces, such as the “Pietà” (1978) in Klosterstrasse in Berlin-Mitte and the “Große Laufende”. His first marriage was to Emerita Pansowová née Molnárová (son Till Pansow) and his second marriage to Renate Nürnberg née Hartmann.

His works are characterized by realism and abstraction, which tend towards surrealism. These are realistic pictures in which Jürgen Pansow tries to connect figures and symbols from myths and religions with his worldview. There are unusual results that have to be deciphered by the viewer. On the other hand, he painted amiable still lifes, which he sometimes associated with a landscape. These still lifes are executed with great attention to detail. He was interested in the collage. After the political change he turned more to painting. Large-format pictures that were almost never available to the public originate from this period.

He wrote on December 9, 2008: “Actually, I don't like this kind of gallows humor. We are already living in a time with surrealistic outgrowths that come close to my current feeling. "
