Jürgen Pohl (born October 8, 1954 in Landsberg am Lech ; † June 11, 2014 ) was a German geographer and professor of social geography at the University of Bonn .

Life

Pohl studied geography , economics , urban development and regional planning in Munich and began his academic career in 1981 at the Technical University of Munich as an employee of Robert Geipel . In 1986 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on "Geography as Hermeneutic Science", in which he dealt with the " Munich School of Social Geography ". In contrast to the traditions of this direction of the subject pursued in Munich and above all to the quantitative revolution in geography, Pohl took a clear opposing position with his plea. In his further scientific work, Jürgen Pohl was instrumental in advocating a turn in individual theory based on methods of qualitative empirical research in human geography . In his habilitation thesis he dealt with "Regional awareness as a topic of social geography" based on empirical studies in Friuli, northern Italy . The work pursued an idiographic-historical perspective, inspired by the renaissance of historicism, and derived from this an opportunity for regionalist approaches in geography. Since 1996 he has taught as a professor at the Geography Institute at the University of Bonn. Since 1997 he has been co-editor of the Geographische Zeitschrift.

Inspired by the research carried out in the context of his dissertation in the Friuli region, which was hit by a severe earthquake shortly before this point in time, Pohl also turned to geographic hazard research . Another focus of his research dealt with the currents and turns of human geography. Pohl prominently represented the perspective of geography as a spatial science, as shown by his reply to Benno Werlen's article “Is there a geography without space?” In Geography in 1993, which he also published there under the title “Can it be a geography without space? ".
