Jürgen Zeddies (born June 28, 1942 in Hameln ) is a German agricultural economist, he is emeritus of the University of Hohenheim and advisor to German and international government and research organizations.

biography

As the son of a farmer, Zeddies grew up on his parents' business, attended the Michelsenschule in Hildesheim like his ancestors and obtained the qualification "State-certified farmer" with university entrance qualification. He studied "Agricultural Sciences" in Göttingen, received his doctorate in 1969 and qualified as a professor in 1974.

In the summer semester 1974 he took over the substitute chair for Wilhelm Brandes and in October 1974 he was appointed professor for agricultural management at the University of Hohenheim. He held this position until 2008.

On behalf of federal and state ministries, Zeddies drafted expert reports on, for example, guaranteed milk quantity regulation, set-aside, direct payments to agriculture (together with A. Henze) and on behalf of the EU Commission on the reform of the sugar market regime (together with Wilhelm Henrichsmeyer ).

Zeddies was a permanent advisor to the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and the Society for International Cooperation on economic issues relating to crop protection (including Yemen, Nigeria, Philippines, Tonga, Samoa, Morocco), improved seeds (including Nepal, Sri Lanka, Morocco) and new production processes technical innovations (including the Azores, Philippines, Egypt, Benin).

In China, Zeddies was the first foreigner to carry out a study on land reform on behalf of the Chinese government (1986 in collaboration with Erwin Reisch and W. Grosskopf), which was implemented in a few years. After the dissolution of the "Eastern Bloc", he used EU projects to build up the Hohenheim network. Scientists from Poland, Romania, Ukraine, Lithuania, Russia, Uzbekistan, Armenia and Georgia have been trained in Hohenheim, their home institutes have been equipped with the Internet, computers and specialist books.

Zeddies was spokesman for a special research area of ​​the German Research Foundation for nine years and head of a graduate school of the German Research Foundation for ten years. He was a member of the Main Committee and Senate of the German Research Foundation for six years. He was a member of the scientific advisory board at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forests and the sustainability advisory board of the state of Baden-Württemberg.
