Jānis Endzelīns
Jānis Endzelīns ( German Janis Endzelin ; born February 22, 1873 in the Mičkēni homestead near Mūrmuiža , Livonia Governorate ; † July 1, 1961 in Koknese ) was a Latvian linguist.
Life
Jānis Endzelīns studied philology at the University of Dorpat and was a professor there. In 1907 he and Kārlis Mīlenbahs published the first truly scientific grammar of the Latvian language . From 1909 to 1920 he then worked at the University of Kharkov and then until 1961 at the University of Riga . In 1926 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . As the leading Latvian philologist of his time, he was instrumental in the development of the Latvian language in the 20th century. The current Latvian alphabet can also be traced back to him.
Honors
- The elementary school in Kauguri bears his name as Jāņa Endzelīna Kauguru pamatskola .
- Since 1967 there has been a Jānis Endzelīns Prize, which is awarded today by the Latvian Academy of Sciences .

Endzelins was the father of the Latvian chess player Lūcijs Endzelīns , whose wife was the multiple Latvian chess master Milda Lauberte .
