The J / 80 is a unit class recognized by the International Sailing Federation . In Germany it is considered an international class (keel boat). The more than 1400 boats sold worldwide are mainly actively sailed in North America, Europe and Asia in ranking regattas of the national class associations. Every year a world championship takes place under the umbrella of the international J / 80 class association. In the years in which the World Cup is not held in Europe, a European Championship takes place.

In addition to the mainsail and jib, a characteristic feature is the 65 m² gennaker , which is why these and similar sport keel boats are called trunk boats in the German-speaking world (see DSV yardstick list ).

The J / 80 was designed in 1992 by Rod Johnstone and his company J / Boats. The aim was to create a sports boat that was both easy and safe to sail and that should enable planing at speeds of up to 20 knots. Another design condition was u. a. the width of 2.50 m permitted in road traffic.

In practice, speeds of around 15 knots are quite possible . Reports and videos exist at speeds of 19 knots. These speeds are no longer a specialty in regatta. But the J / 80 is the only one among the sports boats of this size and speed potential to be classified with CE category B = offshore (waters remote from the coast) and its easy handling with a small crew is praised in the press.

The J / 80 is sailed in regattas by four people, whereby according to the class rules not the number, but only the crew weight is limited to 338 kg (746 lb), so that women's and youth crews often compete in groups of five. The technical limits of 950 kg or eight people are practically irrelevant for cruising, even if six people can easily be accommodated in the cockpit for a day trip. A maximum of four people can find a bunk below deck.
