JAM Dancehall

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The JAM Dancehall was a discotheque in the center of Leipzig . It was located at Grosse Fleischergasse 12, part of the historic building complex of the Round Corner , which was actually used by the city of Leipzig and earlier by the Ministry for State Security . The JAM opened on the first weekend in December 1997 and existed until May 25, 2002.

history

The predecessor of JAM, the YouToo disco opened in 1995 and only existed for 2 years, after which the premises were renovated and rebuilt. The new concept "JAM Dancehall" celebrated its opening on December 5th, 1997. After a while the JAM made a name for itself beyond Leipzig and gained more and more importance for the electro , music and techno scene.

From 1999 the first well-known DJs followed the call of the JAM and increasingly star DJs such as Blank & Jones , Kai Tracid , DJ Talla, Marc Spoon, Dr. Motte , Westbam , Mario Lopez , ATB u. v. a. invited.

At the beginning of the year 2000 the regular live broadcast on the public radio of the station Energy Sachsen UKW 99.8 MHz began - always in the night from Saturday to Sunday from midnight to 4 am under the name "Energy Dancehall - live from the JAM Dancehall Leipzig". Traditional high school graduation parties and a six-monthly high school party were unique in Leipzig's disco industry. The JAM thus gained awareness and influence on the youth generation in Saxony.

After owner conflicts, Merkur Gastro GmbH closed the JAM in May 2002, despite the continued high number of visitors. The following facility, YouToo, was unable to build on the success of the Jam and also had to close a year later. The last tenant was the Alpenmax disco until 2016 . From 2007 there were several JAM memorial parties in another Leipzig discotheque on the outskirts.

The resident DJs were Jens Maiwald and DJ Loop.

meaning

The jam was big enough to receive 1500 guests per week and, in addition to the main floor for electronic music, offered a smaller floor for black music and, in summer, a large terrace for open-air events in the inner courtyard of the building complex. As a result, the maximum number of guests was reached on April 30, 2001 with around 1900 guests.

technology

The JAM was not only a musically pioneer, but was also state-of-the-art in terms of equipment and technology. The Laserphysics 300 mW white light were a novelty in discos at the time, as was a SAFEX pyrotechnic system for special effects. Live transmission via ISDN on the desk. A card system for paying one's own "guest bill" was still new in discos in the region.
