JJY

JJY is the call sign of two Japanese long-wave transmitters for broadcasting the time signals of the UTC world time .

JJY40 sends time signals on the long wave frequency of 40  kHz from 790 m high mountain Ōtakadoya ( 大鷹 鳥 谷 山 , -yama ; 37 ° 22 ′ 21 ″  N , 140 ° 50 ′ 56 ″  E ) on the border between Tamura and Kawauchi in Fukushima prefecture .

JJY60 transmits on 60 kHz from the 900 m high Hagane Mountain ( 羽 金山 , -yama ; 33 ° 27 ′ 56 ″  N , 130 ° 10 ′ 32 ″  E ) on Kyushu Island on the border between Saga , Saga Prefecture and Itoshima , Fukuoka .

JJY40 is approximately 16 km from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant . On March 12, 2011, 19:46 JST (UTC + 9) , the transmitter was switched off due to the Fukushima nuclear disaster and was put back into operation on April 21, 2011.
