WWV is the callsign of an American shortwave transmitter to broadcast the official US time UTC by means of time signals . The transmitter works on five round frequencies in continuous operation.
Content of broadcasts
The American authority National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) broadcasts time signals on the shortwave frequencies 2.5, 5, 10, 15 and 20 MHz with the WWV transmitter from Fort Collins in the US state of Colorado .
The IRIG timecode in the IRIG H format is used for broadcasting. The signal can also be heard on the telephone announcement + 1-303-499-7111. In addition, weather warnings for shipping , the status of the GPS and geophysical warnings about radio propagation are broadcast every hour at defined times .
The advantage of shortwaves (which also use Russian and Chinese time signal transmitters) is the good reflection on ionospheric layers , which gives the time signal a large, albeit somewhat variable, range.
Long wave transmitter WWVB
At the same location, a long-wave transmitter under the callsign WWVB is operated on the frequency 60 kHz .
WWVH shortwave transmitter in Hawaii
For the Pacific , NIST also operates a shortwave transmitter with the callsign WWVH in Kekaha on the island of Kaua'i in Hawaii . The transmission frequencies are 2.5 MHz, 5 MHz, 10 MHz and 15 MHz. WWVH uses a female voice to distinguish the transmission of WWV on the same frequencies. This signal can also be heard on the telephone announcement + 1-808-335-4363.
