The JPMorgan Chase Tower (formerly Texas Commerce Tower ) is the name of the tallest skyscraper in the city of Houston as well as in the state of Texas .
The 300-foot skyscraper is the 15th tallest building in the United States . The building was commissioned by JPMorgan Chase Bank in 1978 , with completion four years later in 1982. The architectural office 3D / International was entrusted with the planning of the building and thus the executing architect. When completed, the structure was not only the tallest building in the city and state, but also the tallest building in the United States west of the Mississippi . The tower lost this title in 1990 to the 310 meter high US Bank Tower in Los Angeles . Architecturally, the building is particularly striking due to its shape and the grayish shimmering facade in the Houston skyline.
There is a public viewing platform on the 60th floor, which is open on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. From there, a view of the entire Houston area is possible. The remaining floors are used exclusively for offices, apart from a few technical facilities that ensure operation in the building. There is a colorful sculpture by Joan Miró at the entrance to the building .
By Hurricane Ike October 13, 2008 numerous windows of the building were destroyed.
