The JT International Germany ' is a company based in Trier tobacco production and at the same time, the German branch of the Japanese tobacco company Japan Tobacco . The German business includes the market organization in Cologne and the production facility in Trier . A total of around 1,950 people are employed there.

The group Japan Tobacco International (JTI) , headquartered in Geneva (Switzerland) encompasses the international tobacco business of Japan Tobacco Inc., the third largest tobacco producer in the world. In 2013, JTI sold 416.4 billion cigarettes worldwide for net sales of $ 12.273 billion.

history

The history of JTI Germany goes back to the middle of the 19th century, when Johann Neuerburg planted the first tobacco in Wittlich on the Moselle around 1850 and opened a smoking tobacco factory in 1866. The company grew rapidly and in 1900 already had 600 employees. After the founder's death, his children took over the business and chose Haus Neuerburg as the company name. On May 18, 1908, cigarette production started in Trier. 20 years later, Haus Neuerburg already had 7,000 employees and was one of the main brands with the Overstolz cigarette brand, which is still known today . In 1960, RJ Reynolds , the then leading US tobacco manufacturer, initially bought the majority of Haus Neuerburg in order to take over the company entirely nine years later. RJ Reynolds brought the Camel and Winston brands into the company.

JTI was founded in 1999 when Japan Tobacco Inc. acquired RJ Reynolds' international tobacco business. In 2007 Gallaher (one of the FTSE 100 companies and then the fifth largest global tobacco company) was acquired by Japan Tobacco Inc. At the time, this represented the largest takeover by a Japanese company abroad.

In 2009, the JT Group bought Tribac Leaf Limited, a company that sources tobacco from Africa and Asia, and the Brazilian companies Kannenberg, a tobacco manufacturer, and KBH & C, which sell Kannenberg products.

Today Japan Tobacco International is the third largest tobacco producer in the world and includes Camel, Winston and Mild Seven, three of the five most successful tobacco brands in the world.
