At the age of eighteen Jaap van Praag joined the Sociaal-Democratische Arbeiderspartij (SDAP). In 1933 he became editor of the magazine De Jonge Gids, which was published by the Nederlandsche Bond van Abstinent Studerenden, an organization of non-drinkers, vegetarians, non-smokers, anti-militarists and do-gooders, and the radical-pacifist youth organization Jongeren Vredes Actie. He later became editor of the young socialist magazine Fundament, which was created instead. In 1933 van Praag became a member, later chairman of the organization Studenten Vredes Actie, he was also a member and from 1937 to 1939 chairman of the Jongeren Vredes Actie. Van Praag had left the SDAP with regard to the SDAP's approach to disarmament and joined the Onafhankelijke Socialistische Partij (OSP), later he left the OSP and rejoined the SDAP. He met many people who would later become active in the humanist movement in socialist and pacifist organizations. Van Praag studied philology and philosophy cum laude and then, from 1938, worked as a high school teacher for Dutch.

From May 1940 to May 1945 the Netherlands was under German occupation . Due to a ban imposed by the National Socialist occupiers on people who they identified as Jews in their ideology, van Praag was no longer able to work as a teacher at his school from December 1940. From 1941 to around 1942 he was a teacher at the joodse middelbare school in Rotterdam. Van Praag wrote a dissertation on Henriëtte Roland Holst from February to August 1941 . In 1943 he was imprisoned for six weeks for helping a child that the occupiers called Jewish into hiding. From October 1943 until the liberation of the southern Netherlands in September 1944, he went into hiding in Eindhoven .

Van Praag received his doctorate cum laude in 1946 . He participated in the founding of the humanist organization Humanist Verbond and became its chairman. He was also a member of the provincial parliament of South Holland for the social democratic PvdA, from 1954 to 1974 he was a member of the provincial government. He helped found the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) and was its chairman from 1952 to 1975. From 1964 to 1979 van Praag was a professor for humanistics and the anthropology of humanism at the Rijksuniversiteit Leiden . Until his death he was a lecturer in humanistics at the Humanist Opleidings Instituut, founded in 1964, an institution for vocational training for humanist spiritual assistance, humanist spiritual education and humanist spiritual education in schools. On the occasion of van Praag's departure as chairman of the Humanist Association in 1969, the Dr. JP van Praag-prijs donated. Van Praag received the IHEU Special Award. Van Praag had been married since 1936 and had four children.

In 1943 Jaap van Praag wrote the work Modern humanisme: een renaissance? . The cover reads: “This book was born out of the need for a responsible worldview on a non-religious basis that could be both a foundation for personal life and a guideline for a cultural activity. This worldview is the modern humanism to which this book testifies. ”Among other things, it calls for a movement for the organization and education of non-ecclesiastical people; according to their statements, this organization became the Humanist Association.

In the speech on its establishment, van Praag distinguished between two issues. The "little quarrel" serves for equality of non-church people in society. The "big argument" is directed towards a publication by the Humanist Verbond about the Dr. According to JP van Praag-prijs 2011 against any form of “nihilism” ( moral indifference ). Since conscious Christians or conscious humanists would have been less susceptible to National Socialism, the geestelijke weerbaarheid (literally "spiritual / spiritual defense") of the people must be increased. In 1953 van Praag Geestelijke verzorging op humanistische grondslag published about spiritual assistance on a humanistic basis.
