The Jaberg , also called Joberg, is 106.6  m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the urban area of Hilden , Mettmann district in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is the highest point in the former Düsseldorf-Mettmann district. At its peak standing observation tower Jaberg Tower.

Geographical location

The Jaberg is located in the Hildener Heide , a heathland area on the southern edge of the Hilden city forest between Hilden in the west and its neighboring town Haan in the east. The mountain belongs to the natural area Bergische Heideterrasse on the north-western edge of the Bergisches Land . About 500 meters to the east is the slightly lower 106.2  m above sea level. NHN high sand mountain .

history

The stories about the Jaberg go back to the Stone Age . The mountain is said to be the grave of Attila , king of the Huns , who is said to be buried here in his golden armor and in a golden coffin.

The Hilden legends tell of witches from the Bergisches Land who flew to the Jaberg plateau on broomsticks and pitchforks, especially around the time of Walpurgis Night (April 30th) and St. John's Night (June 24th), but also between Christmas and the Holy Three Kings . Even the devil is said to have been there as a coal-black billy goat. In the 18th century a woman is said to have been burned there as a witch.

Jaberg Tower

On the plateau is the Jaberg Tower, built in 1931 by the Franz Staat construction company, a 13.2 m high observation tower that was later equipped with radio masts. The tower is locked. The tower was open on weekends until the end of 2017, and will be locked from 2018. A key can be borrowed from the town hall.
