Jacek Krzysztof Karnowski (born August 16, 1963 in Danzig ) has been the mayor of Sopot ( German Sopot ) in Poland since 1998 .

Karnowski graduated in 1988 from the Technical University of Gdańsk in the field of civil engineering . In 2008 he received his PhD from the University of Gdansk . Since 1986 he was active in the opposition Ruch Młodej Polski (Movement of Young Poland) . After the political change he became Vice President of the city of Sopot from 1990-1998. In 1991, Karnowski ran for the Sejm without success . At times he was a member of the conservative Partia Konserwatywna . From 1998 until today he is the city president of Sopot. Most recently, he ran as a candidate for the independent "Platforma Sopot" in October 2018 .

In 2002, Karnowski was confirmed in office with 56% of the votes, in 2006 he received 63%, in 2010 it was 51.43% (in the second ballot), in 2014 it was 53% and in 2018 59.2% (preliminary result) of the votes.

He received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal from John Paul II and the Silver Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland from President Aleksander Kwaśniewski .
