Jack Anderson (dance critic)

Jack Warren Anderson (born June 15, 1935 in Milwaukee ) is an American ballet critic and poet .

Life

Jack Anderson studied literature and theater at Northwestern University and creative writing at Indiana University (MA). In 1959, he began working as a journalist for the Oakland Tribune , where he became a theater critic. He also began to write for Dance Magazine , where he was employed from 1964 to 1970. In 1978 he became a ballet critic for The New York Times alongside Anna Kisselgoff and Jennifer Dunning . He retired in 2005. From 1977 he directed the newly founded professional magazine Dance Chronicle: Studies in Dance and the Related Arts with George Dorris (born 1930) . In 2007 you handed the editorial team into younger hands. Jack Anderson and George Dorris were married in Toronto in 2006.

Anderson published several books on dance and dance history, his book on the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo won the 1981 José de la Torre Bueno Prize for dance history.

Anderson has given guest lectures at the American Dance Festival , the University of Adelaide , the North Carolina School of the Arts, the University of Minnesota , the College of St. Catherine (St. Paul, Minnesota), the New School for Social Research , Lehman College , at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Oklahoma .

In 1969 Anderson published the first two of his ten volumes of poetry. He was a visiting poet at the College of DuPage in Illinois and at the University of Kansas . For his poetry he received a fellowship and a literature prize from the National Endowment for the Arts .
