Jack (John) S. Langrishe (or Colonel "Jolly" Jack ) (* 1839 in New York ; † 12. December 1895 in Wardner , Idaho ) was an American actor and director of a theater group through the Wild West moved .

Life

The Langrishe-Allen St. Joseph Theater Company played in Missouri , Kansas , Topeka and Junction City , among others, from 1859 to the early 1860s . The group's productions included the pieces Ten Nights in a Bar Room , Lady of Lyons , Hamlet , Ingomar the Barbarian , Uncle Tom's Cabin and Othello .

Langrishe and his wife Jenette (also an actress) ran the Colorado Denver Theater with Mike J. Doughterty from 1862 to 1876 , with over 1,000 seats. Langrishe set up a saloon in the lower part of the theater in order to have income outside of the season.

In 1870 Langrishe built the Langrishe Opera House in Helena , Montana , which he operated until it was destroyed by a fire in 1874.

In July 1876, Langrishes's cast reached Deadwood . The group initially performed in the former brothel and saloon Bella Union , but soon moved into their own theater, the Deadwood Theater , where the trial of Jack McCall , the murderer of Wild Bill Hickok , had also been held. The group's performances were very successful, and so the theater, which was also often used for court cases during the day, soon became too small. In 1878 Jack Langrishe bought a larger building, the Langrishe Theater, on Sherman Street in south Deadwood. On the stage of the new theater were u. a. famous greats like Fanny Price , Charlotte Cushman , Jim and Belle Gilbert , Augusta Chambers and Viola Porter .

In 1879, with the end of the gold rush, success slowly waned. The last production of the Langrishe Theater in Deadwood was Our American Cousin on August 14, 1879. (The theater building was destroyed in the devastating Deadwood fire on September 26, 1879.) Then the entire theater company moved to Leadville, where they performed on November 20 Performed in the brand new Tabor Opera House in 1880.

In 1886, Langrishe was elected judge in Coeur d'Alene , Idaho. In 1891 he became editor-in-chief of Wardner News .

Estelline Bennett wrote in her book Old Deadwood Days :

"The Langrishe Theater left an unforgettable memory in Deadwood Gulch after three years of such acting as might have been offered to Puritan playgoers and metropolitan critics. Jack Langrishe and his wife are the only actors in the history of theater who, given the choice, prefferd the mountains of the West to Broadway. "

Quote

During a snow storm in 1876 or 1877, Jack Langrishe wrote:

Oh, the stove, the beautiful stove,

Heating the room below and above,

Broiling, roasting and keeping warm,

Beautiful stove, you can do no harm.

Fill her up to thaw your toes,

Fill her to thaw the end of your nose,

Open the damper and let her go,

She'll soon knock the hell out of beautiful snow!
