Jackie King (born 1945 or 1946 in San Antonio , Texas ; † January 24, 2016 in San Rafael , California ) was an American country, folk and jazz guitarist as well as an author and music teacher.

Jackie King grew up in San Antonio and had his first music lessons from his father, a guitarist. He first learned the mandolin before switching to the guitar , which he played left-handed. At the age of twelve he made his first professional appearances in his hometown. In the 1960s, his childhood friend Doug Sahm , then a member of the Sir Douglas Quintet , convinced him to come to him in San Francisco; In the local psychedelic music scene he founded the fusion band Shades of Joy with saxophonist Martin Fierro , with which King released several albums, including the soundtrack for the film El Topo . As a sideman and session musician, King worked with Chet Baker , Sonny Stitt and Merl Saunders, among others .

At the invitation of jazz guitarist Howard Roberts , King worked at the Guitar Institute of Technology in Los Angeles, then taught at the Southwest Guitar Conservatory in San Antonio, which he founded . In 1978 he recorded the album Skylight in Texas . After seven years he continued his musical career and toured as a soloist, also with Willie Nelson , on whose albums Angel Eyes (1984) and The Gypsy (2000) he was involved. In return, Nelson was heard on King's album Night Bird (Columbia, 1986). For Nelson, King co-wrote The Great Divide , the title track of Nelson's Grammy-nominated 2002 album.

In later years, King received an honorary masters degree from San Francisco State University and chaired the Music Teachers' Association of California , taught jazz guitar in workshops and at the Berklee School of Music . He has also written for JazzTimes , All About Jazz and Just Jazz Guitar. In 1999 he presented the solo album Moon Magic ; In 2003 he recorded another album with Marian McPartland for Concord Jazz . In the field of jazz he was involved in seven recording sessions between 1978 and 2003. King last lived in San Rafael, where he died in January 2016 of complications from a heart attack .
