Jacob Born (the elder)

Jacob Born (the Elder) (born July 24, 1638 in Leipzig ; † June 12, 1709 in Dresden ) was a lawyer from the Electoral Saxony and between 1679 and 1691, when the city was replaced, five times mayor of Leipzig .

Life

Jacob Born was the son of the professor of law at the University of Leipzig Johann Born (1600–1660). He studied at the universities of Leipzig , Jena and Strasbourg and attended Dutch academies. In 1663 he was promoted to Dr. jur. PhD.

Born was elected to the Leipzig City Council as early as 1661. In his legal career he became assessor of the lay judge's chair in 1665, assessor of the Leipzig consistory in 1670 and its director in 1683, as well as senior court assessor in 1672 . From 1676 he was Royal Polish and Electoral Saxon Appellation Councilor and from 1695 Royal Polish and Electoral Saxon Real Privy Councilor and used as such by the Dresden court in diplomatic and other state affairs.

The Leipzig council wanted to use his influence at the Saxon court and elected him to the circle of regularly changing mayors. He held this office in 1679, 1682, 1685, 1688 and 1691.

Born was also full professor of the law faculty of the University of Leipzig and canon of Merseburg .

Jacob Born was married twice. His first marriage in 1664 to Christine Bexen, daughter of a Leipzig councilor, had three children, of which only the son Johann Franz survived childhood. He had no children with his second wife Johanna Margarethe Winckler, whom he married in 1679, three years after the death of his first wife.
