Jacobus Finno , also Jacobus Petri Finlandensis , Jaakko Finno , Finnish Jaakko Suomalainen (* around 1540 , † 1588 in Turku ) was a Finnish Evangelical Lutheran clergyman and rector of the cathedral school in Turku. He was considered a moderate reformer and created the first hymn book, the first catechism and the first prayer book in Finnish.

Life

Little is known about Jacobus Finno's youth. He probably attended the Cathedral School in Turku. From January 1563 he studied at the University of Wittenberg and from January 1567 at the University of Rostock .

Church of Maaria

After completing his studies and returning to Finland, he was appointed director of the Cathedral School in Turku in 1568. From 1578 he was lecturer of the cathedral chapter at Turku Cathedral and pastor of Maaria . On behalf of King Johann III. he compiled the first catechism and the first hymn and prayer book in Finnish.

When Theodoricus Petri Ruutha published the collection of church and school hymns Piae Cantiones in 1582 , Jacobus Finno had previously reviewed it and partially corrected it in line with the Reformation . In doing so, he proceeded quite schematically, especially with the Marian chants.

In 1583 he published the first hymn book in Finnish under the title Yxi Wäha Wirsikir . The book contains 101 songs, most of which have been translated from Latin, Swedish and German. Also includes some songs by Mikael Agricola and probably seven of Jacobus Finno's own songs.

Also in 1583 he published a prayer book Yxi dhha Ruous Kiria . It is divided into five parts; Finno mainly used Swedish prayer books as sources, but also Agricola's works and German prayer books. Here, too, he made changes in line with Lutheran theology. Jacobus Finno's prayer book remained very popular until the late 17th century, and his prayers were used until the late 19th century.

His third work, published in 1583, was his Finnish Catechism, the exact title of which is unknown for the first edition. The second edition appeared in 1615 under the title Catechism Eli Sen Christilinens Doctrine Cap Capals . The catechism was Jacobus Finno's most original written work. Later catechisms supplanted it in the 17th century.

With his assignment completed, Jacobus Finno returned that same year as rector of the Turku Cathedral School.

He was married to Margaret Henrikintytyy and had at least two children: Agnes and Henricus. Jacobus Finno died of the plague in autumn 1588 at the age of about 48.
