Jacques-Barthélémy Marin

Jacques-Barthélémy Marin (born August 24, 1772 in Ville , Département Oise , † March 24, 1848 ibid) was a French general of the infantry .

Marin came from a humble background: his father Jacques Marin was a farm laborer, his mother Marie-Catherine Frère a maid.

On September 17, 1792, he joined the army and was quickly able to distinguish himself through courage and bravery.

Napoleon Bonaparte promoted him to lieutenant on September 23, 1795 . When he then planned his invasion of Egypt in 1798 , he transferred important tasks to Marin - after further promotions - in the expedition army. Marin took part in the sieges of Jaffa (March 1799), Acre (March / May 1799) and al-Arish (February 1799). He fought at the pyramids (July 21, 1798) and Abukir (July 25, 1799) and stood with his command in May 1800 before Cairo .

After the surrender of Alexandria in the autumn of 1801, Marin was able to return to France.

Marin took part in the Battle of Paris (March 30, 1814). After Napoleon's abdication and the Treaty of Fontainebleau (April 11, 1814), Marin turned to the Bourbons . He supported King Louis XVIII. until Napoleon left the island of Elba and his rule of the Hundred Days began. Under Napoleon Marin took part in the Battle of Waterloo (June 18, 1815).

On his return to Paris, Marin submitted his resignation and on November 15, 1815, he was officially adopted into retirement. Marin settled in his hometown and withdrew into private life. During the July Revolution of 1830 he abstained from all positions offered. He died on March 24, 1848 in Ville (Département Oise) and found his final resting place there.
