Jacques Cambessèdes

Jacques Cambessèdes (born August 26, 1799 in Montpellier , † December 20, 1863 on his Féroussac estate near Meyrueis ) was a French agronomist and botanist.

life and work

From March to June 1824 Cambessèdes explored the Balearic Islands at the suggestion of Jacques Gay and Alexander von Humboldt and was the first to compile a floristic inventory of the archipelago (title: "Enumeratio Plantarum quas in insulis Balearibus ..."). This publication was a remarkable contribution to the Mediterranean biogeography of the late 1820s.

Several plants bear his name as a specific epithet, including Paeonia cambessedesii , a peony from Mallorca. In botanical taxonomy, the abbreviation "Cambess" is used for Cambessèdes. Cambessèdes was registered on June 10, 1829 with the registration number. 1331 and the academic surname Serra accepted as a member of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina .
