Jacques Cassagne

Jacques Cassagne (also: Cassaigne or Cassagnes ) (born August 1, 1635 in Nîmes , † March 23, 1679 in Paris ) was a French Roman Catholic clergyman, poet, translator and member of the Académie française .

life and work

The southern French Jacques Cassagne was a doctor of theology. From 1660 he distinguished himself through occasional poetry, was (as a collaborator of Colbert ) librarian of the royal library and in 1661 in the Académie française (seat no. 22). When Colbert founded the "Small Academy" on February 3, 1663 as a propaganda instrument for the king, from which the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres later emerged, it initially consisted of four members, including Jean Chapelain , Amable Bourzeis and François Charpentier , also owned by Cassagne. In 1665 he wrote the foreword to the works of Balzac collected by Valentin Conrart . In 1671 he gave the funeral address to Archbishop Hardouin de Péréfixe de Beaumont . He died at the age of 43 in the Saint-Lazare hospital .

His ethics ( Traité de morale sur la valeur ) has been translated into English and is listed in many libraries under the title A moral treatise upon valor . He was also successful with translations of Cicero and Sallust .
