Jacques Schepens

Jacques Schepens SDB (born January 6, 1942 in Gontrode ; † January 20, 2018 in Heverlee ) was a Belgian Salesian from Don Bosco and a religious educator .

Life

Schepens, who came from Belgium, entered the novitiate of the Flemish Province of the Salesians of Don Bosco after graduating from high school in 1961 and took his first religious vows the following year . He studied philosophy and education in Brussels and Leuven from 1962 to 1965 . After working as an educator in Antwerp from 1965 to 1967 , he studied Catholic theology in Leuven from 1967 to 1972. He was ordained a priest in 1974 . After that he received his first teaching positions at the Philosophical-Theological University of Benediktbeuern . From 1978 to 1986 he was a lecturer in religion and ethics at the Leuven University of Education. After receiving his doctorate in theology in 1986 at the Pontifical University of the Salesians in Rome, he worked there and at the Theological University of Leuven / Mechelen as a guest lecturer for pastoral theology and spirituality . In 1991 he was appointed professor for religious education and catechetics in Benediktbeuern, but continued to read in Leuven and Rome. Since 2001, a teaching position for Don Bosco's pedagogy has been added to the Benediktbeuern department of the Catholic Foundation University of Applied Sciences.

After he had to stop teaching in the 2007 summer semester for health reasons, he was retired at the end of the 2008 summer semester.

Schepens was seen as a representative of the dialogue between religious education and the human sciences . Due to his activities in Germany, Belgium and Italy, he also had a comparative eye on the European situation of catechesis and catechetics. As an internationally recognized Don Bosco researcher, he has been answering the question of updating an education in the spirit of Don Bosco since the 1970s. In 1997 he translated Roger Burggraeve's work “The Ethics of Responsibility in the Plural” into German.
