Jadwiga Wołoszyńska

Jadwiga Wołoszyńska (born April 5, 1882 in Nadwórna in Galicia , † August 30, 1951 in Cracow ) was a Polish botanist and university professor . Her fields of work were algology , limnology and paleobotany . Your official botanical author abbreviation is “ Wołosz. ".

Wołoszyńska was the first to graduate from Lwów University and the second woman to receive a professorship at Jagiellonian University . She described 171 new species of algae .

Act

Wołoszyńska studied botany at the University of Lwów from 1903 to 1907 and received his doctorate in 1912. She specialized in algae science and examined lakes in Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, Java , Sumatra and Africa as well as algae in the Baltic Sea . Wołoszyńska became the assistant of Władysław Szafer at the Jagiellonian University in 1924 . In 1930 she became a lecturer and in 1932 the second woman professor. She and the Indologist Helena Willman-Grabowska remained the only university teachers until 1945 . After the Second World War , Wołoszyńska was appointed to the Chair of Pharmaceutical Botany in 1946, which was transferred to the Collegium Medicum in Cracow in 1950 . She continued teaching until her death.

Wołoszyńska published 50 articles in scientific journals, including descriptions of seven new genera , 126 species descriptions and 45 new fossil species.

Wołoszyńska was a member of the Polska Akademia Umiejętności (PAU) scientific society . She was buried in the Rakowicki Cemetery in Kraków.

The armored flagellant Gymnodinium pseudoplaustre Woloszynskia apiculata and the species Jadwigia were named after Jadwiga Wołoszyńska .
