Shin Jae-chul (* 20th December 1936 in Seoul , † 9 July 2012 in Burlington (North Carolina) ) was an American grand master in Tang Soo Do . He was the founder and president of the World Tang Soo Do Association and one of the leading figures in the martial arts of the time.

Life

childhood

Shin was born in Korea and began his long and extraordinary career in martial arts at the age of twelve. An unknown monk inspired him during his childhood; then he wished to learn the martial arts. Later he joined the 'Seoul Moo Duk Kwan' central high school and began in earnest studies under Master Hwang Kee, founder of the Korean Moo Duk Kwan system .

Teacher

As a first dan he soon began his coaching career as an assistant at the central high school. He then taught at Korean University , Seoul Central Youth Organization, several educational institutions, various police and military institutions, and many other places.

When he was drafted into the Korean Air Force in 1958, he gained his first training experience with American soldiers. In 1968, after receiving his degree in political science , he returned to the United States to continue his training with foreign students.

In the same year he founded the United States Tang Soo Do Association with his first school in Burlington . From there the organization expanded into all states of the USA as well as foreign states. Because of the members of other states, the new World Tang Doo Do Association was founded with twelve member states . On November 13, 1982, the founding assembly of this association elected Jae Chul Shin as Grand Master.

personality

Shin paid strict attention to disciplined training and precise techniques. He also always emphasized that the real value of martial arts training lies in its application in daily life. He was also particularly interested in the next generation. His advice to his black belts and trainers also applies to teachers on other subjects. The impact of the teacher is reflected in the behavior of the student.
