Jaffrey is a town in Cheshire County in the US state of New Hampshire . Jaffrey has the status of a "town" and has 5457 inhabitants ( 2010 census ); the urban area is 103.7 km².
geography
Jaffrey is located in southeast Cheshire County. Cities bordering the county are Dublin to the north, Troy and Marlborough to the west, and Rindge to the south. To the east, the Hillsborough County towns Peterborough and Sharon border.
Larger bodies of water in the urban area are Thorndike Pond in the north and Contoocook Lake on the southern boundary of the urban area. The highest point of Jaffrey is Mount Monadnock , a mountain 965 meters above sea level; it is located in the northwestern part of the urban area.
History and miscellaneous
The city existed decades before its actual foundation under the names "Rowley-Canada" and "Monadnock No. 2 ". In 1773 it was officially named a city by Governor John Wentworth and named after a person named George Jaffrey.
From the 1840s the area became increasingly attractive to tourists; it mainly offered opportunities for hiking and mountain hiking. For example, Mount Monadnock was climbed by writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson , Henry David Thoreau and Rudyard Kipling . Emerson dedicated the poem Monadnoc to his experience at Mount Monadnock in 1845 .
The plot of the biography Amos Fortune, Free Man , written by Elizabeth Yates in 1950, is set in Jaffrey.
Together with the neighboring town of Rindge, Jaffrey is part of the Jaffrey-Rindge Cooperative School District , also known as “SAU 47” for short.
