Jagdish Natwarlal Bhagwati (born July 26, 1934 in Bombay ) is an American economist of Indian origin. He is currently Professor of Politics and Economics at Columbia University .

biography

Jagdish Bhagwati graduated from St John's College with a bachelor's degree in economics in 1956 . He received his doctorate in 1967 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . From 1968 to 1980 Bhagwati was an economics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1971 Bhagwati founded the Journal of International Economics , and in 1989 also the journal Economics & Politics .

From 1991 to 1993 he was economic policy advisor to the director general of the GATT . In 2000 he became advisor to the United Nations on globalization issues and in 2001 advisor to the Director General of the WTO . He was also a signatory to the American Enterprise Institute's campaign in 2000 against, in their opinion too many, regulations by the US Environmental Protection Agency .

In January 2004 Bhagwati published In Defense of Globalization ( In Defense of Globalization ). In this book he argues that the globalization process has a human face and that it is necessary to present this face in a more acceptable manner in public. In business circles he was particularly praised for what they consider humorous counter-arguments against points of criticism often used by globalization critics. Bhagwati believes that globalization is being blamed by many critics for things for which they are not at fault.

In May 2004 Bhagwati was a participant in the Copenhagen Consensus . He currently serves on the Academic Advisory Boards of Human Rights Watch (Asia) and the Center for Civil Society . He is also a member of the US think tank Council on Foreign Relations .

Bhagwati is married to Padma Desai. Jagdish Bhagwati's brother, Prafullachandra Natwarlal Bhagwati , is a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India and Bhagwati's niece, Pallavi Shroff, is the manager of a major law firm in India.
