Jagged Alliance: Back in Action is a computer strategy game by the German developer Coreplay on behalf of bitcomposer Entertainment . It is a remake of the previous game Jagged Alliance 2 in 3D graphics and with a real-time combat system that can be paused. Back in Action was released on February 9, 2012 via Kalypso Media for Windows . In February 2014, the game was also released for Mac OS and Linux .

action

The plot is almost unchanged from the predecessor Jagged Alliance 2 . The population of the fictional South American state of Arulco is suppressed by the brutal dictator Deidranna. A squad of mercenaries is hired by Arulco's rightful president from exile to free the country from his wife's reign of terror. The player takes over the leadership of this mercenary troop and begins to recapture the land piece by piece.

Gameplay

Unlike in the model, the player can no longer create his own character. Instead, he can only hire pre-generated mercenaries. Likewise, they are no longer paid monthly, but instead remain permanently employed once hired. The most striking innovation is the real-time combat system known as Plan & Go, which can be paused at any time by pressing a button in order to give instructions to your own mercenaries.

Coreplay subsequently added some game functions to the game via game patches. With the final patch 1.13, the fog of war option as well as the sector inventory known from the original and a revised militia control were added.

development

Course of development

In March 2010, bitcomposer Games announced that the company had acquired the trademark rights to Jagged Alliance from Strategy First and was working on the continuation of Jagged Aliance 3 . In August 2010 the game was finally presented with the title Jagged Alliance 2: Reloaded , at the same time the work on Jagged Alliance Online was announced. In February 2011, the final renaming to Back in Action took place , the release date was given as the end of 2011. After the publication date was only given in October 2011, the publication was finally postponed to February 2012.

When the game was released, it still had bugs, which the development studio tried to fix with several patches. In addition, the game has been expanded to include some functions.

In December 2013, an open beta test of the Mac OS and Linux versions was started. In order to be able to port the game, the graphics engine was exchanged for the Unity engine . On February 14, 2014, the final versions were released for sale.

Download extensions

Coreplay brought several download extensions onto the market after the release. The first four were just smaller item packages:

  • Desert Specialist Kit (February 2012)
  • Jungle Specialist Kit (February 2012)
  • Night Specialist Kit (February 2012)
  • Urban Specialist Kit (April 2013)

A little later, two smaller extensions with their own campaign were added:

  • Shades of Red (Campaign, May 2012)
  • Point Blank (Campaign, June 2012)

Jagged Alliance: Back in Action received mixed ratings ( Metacritic : 62%, GameRankings : 60.29%).

“The footsteps that Jagged Alliance: Back in Action would like to follow are several sizes too big. On the one hand, the game wants to be a remake of the classic, but on the other hand, the developers are not able to keep exactly those elements that were important for the quality of the time. It was simply shortened to the wrong content, while many other improvements and modernizations were simply implemented poorly or inadequately. "

- Marcel Kleffmann : 4Players

“Compared to the timeless original, Back in Action is not a genre milestone - but it is a solid tactical game. Because the Plan & Go mode works, because the selection of mercenaries and weapons is huge, and because I've been busy freeing Arulco for weeks. That does not mean that I am absolutely thrilled, because the operation is still sometimes terribly cumbersome and the AI still tends to occasional "What is this about?" Moments. Nevertheless, I had my fun with Back in Action and judge it for what it is - and not as what, as a fan of the original, I might have secretly wished for. "

- Michael Trier : GameStar

In October Coreplay released the stand-alone add-on Jagged Alliance: Crossfire .
