The Jahn Library for African Literatures is a library of the Institute for Ethnology and African Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz .
history
The Jahn library for African literatures was created as a private collection by Janheinz Jahn , whose interest in African literature was aroused in 1951 at a lecture by the Senegalese poet and statesman Léopold Sédar Senghor in Frankfurt. This interest was linked to activities as a translator , editor , author and freelance journalist , through which Jahn made a significant contribution to the public perception of African literature, especially in Germany. After his death, Jahn's collection was made accessible to a broader public at the beginning of 1975 as a library at the Institute for Ethnology and African Studies at the University of Mainz and has been continuously expanded since then.
The head of the library is Anja Oed.
Duration
The Jahn library for African literatures has a collection of literary works by African authors in over eighty languages, including the former colonial languages as well as a very large number of African languages. The languages range from Acholi and Bambara to Yorùbá and Zulu . In addition to classics from the various literary traditions of Africa, the collection includes international, contemporary bestsellers, but also numerous lesser-known, locally produced works, translations, comics , literary adaptations and audio books . The collection is supplemented by extensive secondary literature and magazines . Many of the books collected are also interesting as objects, e.g. B. as first editions of meanwhile important works or as book copies with handwritten dedications by authors, but also with regard to what their design reveals about the respective publication context.
The Manfred Loimeier Archive is also part of the archive, which consists of 35 files containing newspaper articles, interviews , reviews , information, manuscripts , printouts from websites and numerous other documents on African authors and literature. The journalist , author and literary scholar Manfred Loimeier collected these from the early 1990s to 2010. In summer 2010 he left this collection to the Jahn Library for African Literatures.
