Jaime de Zudáñez

Jaime de Zudáñez (born July 25, 1772 in Chuquisaca , today's Sucre, † 1832 in Montevideo ) was a Bolivian politician and active as an independence fighter in several South American countries.

Life

Zudáñez was born in what is now Sucre, which at that time belonged to the viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata as Chuquisaca . In 1792 he finished his law studies at the Universidad San Francisco Xavier there and moved to the Academia Carolina , where he received his doctorate in 1795.

Zudáñez was a central figure in the Chuquisaca Revolution , which began in Sucre on May 25, 1809 , but was quickly crushed. Zudáñez was arrested and taken to Callao , Peru as a prisoner . After his release, he traveled to Chile in 1811 , where he joined the independence movement there under Generals Bernardo O'Higgins and Juan Mackenna . In 1814, after the crushing defeat at the Battle of Rancagua, he escaped capture and fled to Argentina .

From 1817 to 1819 Zudáñez was Vice President of the Congress of Tucumán , which was meeting in Buenos Aires at the time . From 1820 he lived in Montevideo , where he was a member of the Uruguayan Constituent Assembly from 1828-1830 .

Appreciation

The Bolivian province of Jaime Zudáñez and the small town of Zudáñez were named after the politician . Both are in the Chuquisaca department .
