In okhtyrka , Kharkov Governorate , Russian Empire , † May 27 jul. / 8. June  1898 greg. in Charkow , Russian Empire) was a Ukrainian romantic poet .

Life

Yakiv Shchoholiv was born in Okhtyrka in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Sumy, the son of an old noble family.

From 1832 to 1835 he attended a three-tier district school in Ochtyrka and then the first Charkier grammar school. At the time he was reading the works of Walter Scott and Nikolai Gogol and writing his first poems. Due to the criticism of Wissarion Belinski , he gave up poetry for the time being. Shchoholiw studied at the historical-philological faculty of the University of Kharkiv , which he graduated in 1848.

During his studies he came into contact with professors Amwrossij Metlynskyj , Ismail Sresnewski (1812–1880) and Nikolai Kostomarow , who had a great influence on him. Metlynskyj in particular awakened a longing for the Ukrainian past in him, which prompted him to write again.

Between 1849 and 1870 he was employed in the public service in the government administration. In 1871 he retired and settled permanently in Kharkiv, where he died at the age of 73.

Shchoholiw became famous as a poet. In 1883 he published his collection of poems Worskla and in 1898, on the day of his funeral, the collection of poems "Sloboshanshchyna" was published. Many of his poems were composed like folk songs, then set to music by musicians and enriched the repertoire of Ukrainian songs.
