Jakob Crepaz-Maidl (also called Jocl Crepaz da Maidl ; * July 23, 1874 in Cherz Buchenstein ; † January 14, 1940 in Ortisei in Val Gardena , South Tyrol ) was a sculptor.

Life

Jakob Crepaz-Maidl comes from a mountain farming family with eight children. As a child he tended goats in the Incisa pastures and carved small objects with his pocket knife. Later he came to Ortisei in Val Gardena in the workshop of Ferdinand Demetz , where he completed his apprenticeship. He also worked in the workshop of Josef Riffeser-Stufan.

On October 21, 1907, he married Adelinde Sotriffer. He had two sons, Carlo and Leo, both artists. He spent the First World War as a soldier on the fronts at Col di Lana , Judicaria , Folgaria and Monte Maio. It is said that he carved a snow figure in honor of the emperor Karl , but that his comrades destroyed them at night because they were angry with the emperor because of the war. In 1920 he founded with Giacobe Mussner-Scizr, Vinzenz Moroder-Scurcia and many other artists the association for the "Exhibition for Art and Applied Arts". The first exhibitions of this association took place in the building of the elementary school in Ortisei.

Works

Many of his works have been sent all over the world. In Ortisei in the Parish Church , the St.. Elizabeth of Hungary two angels and Christ, to admire the altar of Rosarien church. In the Antonius Church in Ortisei there are two wooden sculptures of the Crepaz in the Lourdes grotto . He also liked to carve snow figures, of which, on the occasion of the market survey of Ortisei, a St. Ulrich and allegories about handicrafts in Val Gardena. On the occasion of the opening of the first ice rink in Ortisei, he carved a St. Don Bosco out of snow.
