history

View from the northwest

The decision to build a new parish church at the end of the 18th century on the Bugon Hill in Ortisei sparked a bitter long dispute among the villagers in the parish, which then had around 1000 members. Above all, the residents of Oberwinkel wanted to keep the old location next to the Anna Church in the cemetery.

The Tyrolean master builder Joseph Abenthung from Götzens carried out the construction work in the years 1792–1796. In 1797 the church was consecrated by the Brixen bishop Karl Franz von Lodron . The dome in the porch and the three domes in the nave were painted by the academic painter Franz Xaver Kirchebner and his brother Josef . In 1870 more ceiling paintings in the presbytery were made by the Brixen painter Josef Barth the Elder. The side altars in the nave are on the right the Marien Altar based on plans by the Munich architect J. Schneider and on the left the Joseph Altar based on drawings by the Bozen architect J. Überbacher. The Stations of the Cross made of stone are the work of Ferdinand Demetz and Franz Tavella . The 16 painted stained glass windows depict the 12 apostles and, in the Sacred Heart Chapel, Saint John the Baptist, Saint Anne and in the Rosary Chapel, Jesus and Mary. In 1905/07 the church was expanded around two aisles, with the Sacred Heart Chapel on the right , on the left the Rosary Chapel , expanded according to plans by Josef Rifesser-Stufan. In 1983 the church was covered with a new 1600 m² shingle roof made of larch wood as part of a very extensive restoration work.

It was not until 1985–1986 that Sebastian Pfeffer painted the side chapels with plenty of frescoes.

organ

In 1798 the first organ was built by Benedikt Griesser and Michael Schultes from Ottobeuren with 23 registers at a price of 1,300 guilders. In 1910 a new organ was built by Anton Behmann from Vorarlberg with 25 registers for 22,000 crowns.

In 2010 a new organ with 2000 pipes was completed by the organ builders Pirchner from Steinach am Brenner and consecrated on April 17th by Bishop Karl Golser . The new organ has a fully mechanical action, 31 sounding stops, 7 of which are reed stops. The length of the pipes varies between 2 cm and 5 m. With the necessary renovation of the church, it cost 682,175 euros, a third of which was covered by private donations. On January 14th 2011 there was a concert in the church with Olivier Latry , organist of the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral , with compositions by Boëly , Dupré Jean Langlais , Gaston Litaize , Alain , Duruflé , Manuel Obkircher , and improvisations by Latry himself.
