Josef Mersa
Josef Mersa or Ujep Mersa (born October 18, 1871 in Colfosco in the Gadertal , † September 27, 1914 in Brixen , South Tyrol ) was a Tyrolean sculptor .
Josef Mersa learned to sculpt in Ortisei in Val Gardena and married Elisabeth Rifesser from the Rifesser da Stufan publishing family there. His most important work is the Rosary Madonna in the parish church of Ortisei in Val Gardena . At the Villa Rifesser Stufan in Ortisei, three half-length figures of the Tyrolean freedom fighters Andreas Hofer , Katharina Lanz , Joseph Speckbacher and Father Joachim Haspinger , carved by Josef Mersa, can be seen.
His son Franz (1909–1974) was a teacher at the art school in Bressanone for 24 years and trained numerous sculptors in his workshop in Bressanone.
