from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jakob Fischer (* 1863 in Rottum ; † 1943 in Mettenberg ) was an Upper Swabian farmer , after whom the apple variety Jakob Fischer is named.

Life

Jakob Fischer grew up at Niklas' residential area on the K7570 between Mittelbuch and Rottum near Steinhausen an der Rottum in Upper Swabia . In the land register archive, dated to the year 1850, a person named Fischer is registered as the owner of a small farmstead .

In 1892 he took over the farmstead including the agricultural land from his father. In addition to his job as a farmer, he was also a seed seller and shoemaker . In the records of the Rottum Warrior Association , it can be read that he helped organize the Christmas tree celebration in 1898 . The flugelhornist was also a founding member of the Mittelbuch music association . Jakob Fischer sold his farmstead near Rottum in 1928 and moved to Mettenberg near Biberach an der Riss , where he died in 1943. Fischer is buried in the Protestant cemetery in Biberach.

In 2012 the square in front of the multi-purpose hall Steinhausen in Jakob-Fischer-Platz was named in honor of Jakob Fischer and a memorial plaque was unveiled.

In 1903 Jakob Fischer accidentally discovered a small apple tree, which he dug up and transplanted into his garden. This wildling became a stately tree which in 1912 bore large, flat-spherical and irregularly shaped apples. Some of these apples were presented to experts from the Württemberg Gardening Association in Stuttgart in 1914 and were then named after their discoverer Jakob Fischer. The Jakob Fischer cultivated apple developed into a standard variety in the Kingdom of Württemberg . The original tree of the Jakob Fischer apple variety recorded in the list of natural monuments in the Biberach district is located in the immediate vicinity of the farm.
