List of apple varieties |
Jakob Fischer , also known as Schöner vom Oberland , is a cultivar of the cultivated apple .
history
In 1903 Jakob Fischer discovered a small apple tree in the immediate vicinity of his property in Rottum in Upper Swabia , which he transplanted into his garden. This tree first produced fruit in 1912, and in 1914 some of these apples were presented to experts from the Württemberg Gardening Association in Stuttgart, whereupon they were named Jakob Fischer after its discoverer . The apple developed into a versatile standard variety in the Kingdom of Württemberg . In 1998 the variety was chosen as the orchard variety of the year in Baden-Württemberg in order to promote its use for extensive cultivation in view of its favorable properties .
description
The externally appealing fruit is large to very large, flat-spherical and irregularly shaped. The base color of the shell is light yellow, the outer color a strong red with blue-violet tires. Flowering takes place very early and for a long time, but is not suitable as a pollen donor because it is triploid . It is suitable both as a dessert fruit and as a household apple for canning, baking, juicing and for compotes.
The fruits are ripe for picking in early to mid-September and tend to fall off. They are ready to eat straight away and should be consumed quickly as they only have a shelf life of around four weeks. Due to these properties, this apple variety is unsuitable for modern commercial production.
The apple variety is important as a parent , as Jakob Fischer is characterized by straight growth and frost hardiness. In addition, even if the crown refinement has failed, the apple tree still carries usable table apples from the rootstock alone.
