Ulm butter pear
The Ulmer Butterbirne (also: Albecker Butterbirne ) is an old pear variety that was first found on the Steige between Ulm and Albeck .
history
The variety was first described in 1868 as the Albecker Steigbirne . After 1880 the Scheerer tree nursery in Albeck increased it and brought it to the market. The Ulm butter pear is similar to the autumn egg pear described by Johann Volkmar Sickler as early as 1801. In 2016, the Ulm Butter Pear was the fruit of the year in Baden-Württemberg.

The variety is frost hardy and is therefore also suitable for higher altitudes. The tree forms a large, tall crown that can overhang when it is old. The Ulm butter pear shows only a slight alternation and regularly brings high yields.

The small to medium-sized fruits of the Ulm butter pear have a rounded to egg-shaped shape. The basic color of ripe pears is light yellow to slightly greenish, on the sunny side they can be bright red. The long, thin fruit stalk is slightly curved. The whitish flesh is juicy and melting, the taste is sweet and slightly spicy. The Ulm butter pear is ripe for picking between late September and mid-October. The fruits are sensitive to pressure, cannot be stored for long and should be consumed soon. They are particularly suitable for drying and distilling schnapps .
