The Sülibirne is a pear variety that occurs in the southern Black Forest, in the Lake Constance region and on the Upper Rhine. The name means “pig's pear” in Alemannic , the variety probably comes from Switzerland. The variety is also known as Säulibirne , small Saubirne , Silibirne or Thurgauer Mostpirne . It is very suitable for making perry must and fruit brandies. The trees can become very large and reach a great age. The State Association for Fruit Growing, Garden and Landscape, Baden-Württemberg eV declared the Sülibirne to be the fruit variety of the year 2002.

description

The trees grow slowly at a young age, but they can become very large and form an imposing crown. A tree of this variety was 230 years old. Süli pears do not make any special demands on the location. The Süli pear blooms early, its fruits ripen late, around the end of October. She regularly delivers high yields. The small, cone-shaped fruits are initially green-yellow, with increasing degree of ripeness, dark-yellow and rusty. The juicy, coarse-grained flesh is rich in sugar and acids and very tart.
