James II Bernoulli

Jakob II Bernoulli (born October 17, 1759 in Basel , † July 3, 1789 in St. Petersburg ; also Jacob II Bernoulli ) was a Swiss mathematician and physicist.

His father was Johann II Bernoulli and his uncle Daniel Bernoulli .

Jakob II Bernoulli studied law in Basel. After unsuccessful applications for a professorship in physics, he became secretary of the imperial envoy in Venice . In 1786 he became an adjunct of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg and in 1788 a full academic member of mathematics.

In 1789 he married Charlotte Euler, a daughter of Johann Albrecht Euler and granddaughter of Leonhard Euler . After two months of marriage, at the age of 29, Bernoulli drowned in the Neva .

His work on the theory of vibrating plates is considered to be his most important achievement.
