Jakob Odenthal (pastor)

Jakob Odenthal , also Jacob Odenthal, (born February 9, 1858 in Bergisch Gladbach , † June 26, 1921 in Düren ) was a German priest .

In 1878 the son of a wealthy farmer graduated from the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Cologne . Then he began his theology studies in Bonn . He had to complete his studies in Eichstätt, as the seminary in Cologne was closed due to the culture war .

Odenthal was ordained a priest on March 26, 1882 in Eichstätt (Bavaria) . For 15 years he was chaplain in the parish of St. Mariä Himmelfahrt in Mülheim an der Ruhr . Afterwards he was rector of the new Herz-Jesu rectorate for three years , which in 1901 was elevated to a parish . He came to Düren on May 23, 1906. There he became pastor at the Marienkirche . He wrote the commemorative publication in 1915 for the inauguration of the extension to St. Mary's Church, which he had initiated: “Bethanien in Düren”. On September 24, 1916, Odenthal was introduced as senior pastor at the Anna Church .

In his biography he was described as follows:

"It remains unforgettable how he walked through the church or stood on the pulpit with his huge length, all of which towered over his head, probably the only one in Düren who still wore high boots according to old fathers' custom."

Odenthal was a great preacher and a globetrotter, rare for that time . He traveled a lot and wrote about it. He used the writings to finance further trips.

On March 6, 1956, the street previously called "Schweringstrasse" in the Mother Gods House settlement was renamed "Odenthalstrasse".
