Jakob Schwarz

Jakob Schwarz (born April 2, 1985 in Graz ) is an Austrian politician from the Greens . He was the Styrian top candidate of his party in the 2019 National Council election and entered the National Council on October 23, 2019 .

life and work

Schwarz comes from a humble background and grew up in Sinabelkirchen , a small rural community. He attended secondary school. Since 2002 he has been a member of the Styrian Greens and the Young Greens . In 2019 he cited the reasons why he had joined the Greens: "I wanted to do something about the fact that we are scrapping our planet and that a child is starving to death every 5 seconds worldwide."

He graduated from the HTBLA for mechanical engineering and IT in Weiz in 2004 . He completed three studies, from 2006 to 2012 a diploma in physics at the University of Graz and at the Old Dominion University in Norfolk, USA, from 2010 he studied economics at the University of Graz and the Università di Bologna and in 2013 a doctorate in physics at the University of Graz. To finance the studies, he took on a wide variety of jobs, for example as a harvest helper , as a KFOR soldier in Kosovo or as a revisionist for measurement and control technology in German nuclear power plants. From 2013 he worked as an atmospheric physicist at the Wegener Center in Graz. There he conducted research in the field of occultation methods , the topic of his dissertation. In 2017 the doctorate to Dr. rer. nat. and he moved to the management consultancy McKinsey & Company in Geneva as a strategy consultant .

Schwarz was also consistently active politically. From 2006 to 2008 he was a GRAS activist in the student council and in the Senate of the University of Graz. From 2011 he was a board member and co-speaker of the European Young Greens (FYEG) for two years . In 2014 he ran for election to the European Parliament and in 2015 for the Styrian state elections. As a priority goal of his work as a parliamentarian, Schwarz cites firstly climate protection measures that enforce the Paris climate goals in Austria , including first the cessation of state subsidies for fossil energy, and secondly an eco-social tax reform.
