Jakow Grigoryevich Kuzenko

Jakow Grigoryevich Kuzenko ( Russian Яков Григорьевич Куценко; born November 22, 1915 in Kiev ; † August 13, 1988 ) was a Soviet weightlifter.

Career

In the 1930s and early 1940s, the sport was divided in the world. Bourgeois sport gathered behind the Olympic idea of Pierre de Coubertin , behind the workers 'sports movement the athletes of the USSR and the workers' sports federations, which also existed in the western states, gathered. In weightlifting , the athletes of the Soviet Union soon showed very good performances, which could keep up with those of the athletes in civil sport. One example of this is Jakow Kuzenko, who was 14 times champion of the USSR in the heavyweight division from 1937. He showed performances that were almost equal to those of the 1936 Olympic champion Josef Manger from Germany . When in 1946 the Soviet Union, without being a member of the International Weightlifting Federation (IMF), appeared and was allowed to participate in the first world championships after the war in Paris in 1946 , Jakow Kuzenko was also there. Kuzenko also started at the European Championships in 1947 and the World Championships in 1950. However, since the USSR was not yet a member of the IOC in 1948, he could not take part in London. Jakow Kuzenko also set a number of world records, but due to the lack of membership of the USSR in the IMF, these can only have an unofficial character.

After finishing his active career, Jakow Kuzenko was head coach of the Soviet Weightlifting Association from 1954 to 1963.
