Jalor ( Hindi : जालौर , Jālaur ; Anglicising Jalore or Jalaur ) is a city in the Indian state of Rajasthan with around 60,000 inhabitants . It is the capital of the district of the same name .
location
Jalor is located on the Jawai River, which only carries water during the monsoon season or after prolonged rainfall, at the foot of the Swarnagiri Mountain, a maximum of 600 m high, a foothill of the Aravalli Mountains , at an altitude of about 170 m above sea level. d. M. The climate is warm to hot; Rain actually only falls in the summer monsoon months from June to September.

A good 86% of the population are Hindus , a good 10.5% are Muslim and a good 2.5% are Jains ; Members of other religions such as Sikhs , Buddhists and Christians hardly play a role. As is common in northern India, the male population is around 10% higher than the female.
economy
The people in the surrounding area mostly live on a self-sufficient basis from a little agriculture and animal husbandry; there are also numerous granite quarries and mills. Craftsmen, traders and service providers of all kinds have settled in the city itself.
history
In ancient times, Jalor was known as Jabalipura . In 1311 it was attacked and sacked by Ala ud-Din Khilji's troops. In the 14th century, the Pashtun Jhalori dynasty ruled here . Later the city belonged to the princely state of Marwar , whose history it shared until India's independence (1947).
Attractions
- The main attraction of Jalor is the medieval and early modern fortress ( fort ) built on a nearby hill with four mighty gates ( Suraj Pol , Dhruv Pol , Chand Pol and Sire Pol ). In the fort area there are several Jain temples , a Hindu Shiva temple and a mosque built in the 16th century .
- There are also several Jain and Hindu temples in the city itself.
- The building called Topekhana formerly housed an iron smelter with an attached cannon foundry.
- Surroundings
- Approx. 20 km south is the village of Santhu with a much-visited Jain shrine.
