James Angus MacKinnon

James Angus MacKinnon PC (born October 4, 1881 in Port Elgin , Ontario - † April 18, 1958 ) was a Canadian politician of the Liberal Party of Canada , who as a member of the lower house and senator for more than 22 years a member of parliament and minister in the 16th was in the Canadian Cabinet of Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King and in the 17th Cabinet of Prime Minister Louis Saint-Laurent .

Life

MacKinnon, who worked as a teacher and manager, was a candidate of the Liberal Party in the elections of October 14, 1935 for the first time elected a member of the House and represented in this until 9 May 1949 in Alberta located constituency Edmonton West .

On January 23, 1939, MacKinnon was appointed by Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King as a non-portfolio minister in the 16th Canadian cabinet. After a government reshuffle, he took over the office of Minister for Trade and Industry on May 9, 1940 and held this office until January 18, 1948. At the same time, he served between March 8 and April 18, 1945 and again from July 30 to August 28, 1945 as Acting Minister for National Income.

After another cabinet reshuffle, he became Minister of Fisheries on January 19, 1948, before Prime Minister King appointed him Minister of Mines and Resources on June 11, 1948. He also held this ministerial office after Prime Minister Louis Saint-Laurent had formed 17th Cabinet on November 15, 1948 until March 31, 1949. He was then again Minister without Portfolio on April 1, 1949, before he left on December 13, 1950 resigned this ministerial post.

After leaving the House of Commons, MacKinnon was appointed to the Senate of Canada on May 9, 1949 at the suggestion of Prime Minister Saint-Laurent, where he represented the Edmonton Senate District until his death on April 18, 1958 . At the time of his death, he was a member of the Canadian Parliament for over 22 years.
