The James B. Duke House on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 1 East 78th Street in Manhattan , New York City , is the former mansion of James Buchanan Duke , the founder of American Tobacco . He had it built by the architect Horace Trumbauer , the design is attributed to his chief designer Julian F. Abele . After a three-year construction phase, James B. Duke moved into the property with his wife Nanaline and their newborn daughter Doris at the end of 1912. James died here in 1925 and his widow and his daughter donated it to New York University in 1957 . After a renovation and redesign by Robert Venturi in 1958, it has since been home to the New York University Institute of Fine Arts .

The Chateau Labottiere in Bordeaux served as a model for the house in the style of Beaux Arts architecture . It has three floors, the top one, originally equipped with twelve bedrooms for the employees, being almost covered by the roof balustrade . The Dukes' bedrooms were on the second floor and the bottom floor is characterized by the main hall with an attached large staircase with marble steps and an ornate iron banister as well as four large rooms ( Music Room , Drawing Room , Dinning Room and Library ). The entrance area is flanked by two Doric columns , which are continued in two Ionic columns on the balcony above. The facade, made of high-quality sandstone, is kept simple with a few decorations that are limited to the arched gusset above the entrance door, the tympanum and the area above the windows on the second floor.

The building was listed by the Landmarks Preservation Commission on September 15, 1970 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 10, 1977 .
