James Cecil, 3rd Earl of Salisbury
James Cecil, 3rd Earl of Salisbury KG PC (* 1646 - † May 1683 ) was an English peer and politician.
Life
Cecil was the son of Charles Cecil, Viscount Cranborne (1619-1660), son of William Cecil, 2nd Earl of Salisbury . His mother was Lady Diana Maxwell, daughter of James Maxwell, 1st Earl of Dirletoun . He is said to have attended St John's College, Cambridge .
In 1666 he served on HMS Royal Charles during the Anglo-Dutch War . In April 1668 he was elected Knight of the Shire for Hertfordshire in the House of Commons . Since his father had died in 1660, he inherited his grandfather as Earl of Salisbury in December 1668 . He left the House of Commons and received a seat in the House of Lords . He was imprisoned in the Tower of London from February 1677 to June 1677 after challenging King Charles II's right to adjourn Parliament . In 1679 he was accepted into the Privy Council and in 1680 as a Knight Companion in the Order of the Garter. In April 1683 he participated in the Rye House conspiracy and was therefore expelled from the Privy Council. He died a few weeks later.
Marriage and offspring
On October 1, 1661 he married Lady Margaret Manners († 1682), daughter of Francis Manners, 8th Earl of Rutland . He had ten children with her:

- Lady Frances Cecil († 1698) ⚭ Sir William Halford, 1st Baronet;
- Lady Mary Cecil († 1740) ⚭ Sir William Forester;
- Lady Margaret Cecil (1672-1728), ⚭ (1) John Stawell, 2nd Baron Stawell , ⚭ (2) Richard Jones, 1st Earl of Ranelagh ;
- Lady Mildred Cecil († 1727) ⚭ Sir Uvedale Corbet, 3rd Baronet, ⚭ (2) Sir Charles Hotham, 4th Baronet.
When he died in 1683, his son James inherited him as Earl of Salisbury.
